Real-Time Remote Safety Monitoring

The Wontechmi Mini Robot Home Surveillance Camera is a feature packed security camera that may look like a robotic toy but the look is deceiving. It is indeed a sophisticated security camera with all the functions you need to efficiently monitor your home, your children, office or any other indoor area.
It serves well as a baby monitor and one of the reason I chose this security camera is how well it blends in with my child’s bedroom style and toys.

When I took a look at the specifications, I knew this home monitor means business. Here’s a list of features:

That’s all the specs I’m aware of.


Everything to get started is included. There is hardware included[HW] for wall or ceiling installation. What I else found inside the box is a nice looking USB charger[1] and cable[2] to power the monitor[3], a Reset pin[4] to restore the device to factory settings, and a user guide[5].

The setup is uncomplicated and takes less than 3 minutes. First, download the app via the provided QR code, or search in Google Play or Apple’s App Store for “Netcam”, or enter http://www.netcam360.com/en.html. Once you got the appropriate software installed, you need to configure first the Wi-Fi connection:
 
In Android  
Add Device→Wireless Configuration WIFI→Camera→Enter WIFI credentials and press Start Configuration*→Click on ID number→Enter username admin, 
leave password field blank→Tap on Done in upper right corner→Monitor reboots and is ready to be accessed via app.
In iOS  
Add Device→One key to add device→Camera→Enter WIFI credentials and press Start Configuration*→Click on ID number→Enter username admin,
leave password field blank→Tap on Done in upper right corner→Monitor reboots and is ready to be accessed via app.

*Keep quiet and hold your phone close to the camera during this step as sound waves are used for WIFI configuration (see video).

After the WIFI configuration, I would first change username and password of the camera. What I also did is to set up the camera to sent emails and upload images to an FTP server. This way, I still have a record of events in case something happens to camera like theft or damage. I use Square7.ch as my FTP host. It’s free and I get 7 GB of storage. This service uses port 21. 

Speaking of storage, I also inserted a 32 GB microSD card into the back of the camera. As mentioned in my specifications list, you can use up to 64 GB cards. The card needs to be formatted by the camera which can be done via the app. It’s a short process and gives the benefit of additional storage.

As you see, setting up the camera is fast and easy. The picture quality is excellent and I can rotate the camera by directly swiping my finger on the phone’s or tablet’s screen to one direction. Through the app, you can also turn on/off night vision, adjust brightness and image quality, directly take pictures or record on demand. As listed in my specs list before, two-way communication is possible. That’s very practical for me as I can talk to my children directly as if I were there in person. I have the microphone always enabled to monitor my children’s bedroom and use the sound input as alarm trigger during night hours.

The alarm functions are reliable. I tested motion detection as well and it works reliably. In the app, you can set the phone to emit an audible alarm as well. I recommend to go through all settings and become familiar with them in order to fully take advantage of this featureful home monitor.

So far, the Wontechmi Home Surveillance Camera hasn’t failed me. Setup is uncomplicated, no messy software to deal with and it sends me emails, uploads images and dutifully records each alarm event onto my microSD card. For me, it’s a perfect solution for my home surveillance needs and I highly recommend it as baby monitor or general purpose security camera.

After having used this surveillance camera and leaving it running 24/7 for over a week I want to share my opinion and deliver a personal detailed overview of the installation process and review of its features and management.

The package this camera comes in is great and has enough cushion to protect its contents. There is no annoying plastic to cut in order to unbox.

Always make sure, you got everything listed here before proceeding with the installation.

In order to configure this camera, it needs to be connected once with your home router during this process.

First, I connected the Ethernet cable and the AC Power Adapter to the camera and placed the Wi-Fi antenna in its place. Then, I connected the other end of the Ethernet cable to my router and plugged in the AC adapter to an outlet.

Next thing I did is downloading and downloading the iSmartViewPro app. There is an Android and iTunes version. I use both versions and there is practically no difference of interface between them. I scanned the QR code provided in the guide to install the app.

It looks like the app uses peer-to-peer technology and thus you shouldn’t have to worry about adjusting your firewall. I had no issues with my firewall.

The first time, I simply tapped on “Add Camera”. There are two options to add a camera, either through scanning a QR code or through LAN search. I tried both. By the way, the QR code for adding the camera is on its body. In my opinion, the LAN search is simpler and faster. You don’t have to open a scanner app and wait until the QR code gets recognized.

Anyway, once the app found your camera, you only need to enter the default username “admin” and default password “123456”, then tap on “Done” in the upper right corner. The configuration was hasslefree for me and was much less complicated than with my Foscam.

In the app you should now see a thumbnail and see a live stream if you tap on it. I can switch there between 3 different resolutions: 240p, 480p and high-definition 720p. I left it at 720p for best image quality.

I recommend to connect your camera to your Wi-Fi so you don’t have to leave the camera connected to an Ethernet cable. For this, you have to tap on the triangular arrow next to the camera’s thumbnail in the app. This will take you to the “Edit Camera” screen”. Tap on “Advanced Settings” and there you should find an entry for Wi-Fi Settings. The process to connect your camera to Wi-Fi is pretty straightforward. You should see your SSID (if it’s not hidden) and select it, enter your password, and you’re done.

From this point on, you can disconnect your camera from the Ethernet cable and its power supply. It’s ready to be installed anywhere you like. The only limits are the Wi-Fi signal and the length of your extension cord for power supply.  I removed the Wi-Fi antenna before I started to install it on my patio wall. The viewing angle can be adjusted vertically.

Important note here: If you plan to install the camera outdoors in an exposed, make sure you seal the power connection properly like coaxial cables for satellite dishes. I recommend Scotch 23 Electrical Tape. It never failed me. I wonder why outdoor cameras don’t include anything to seal the power and other other connections.

I highly recommend to change the default username and password, I also would check the time setting. Mine had the wrong time zone. Also, I enabled email and FTP uploads when motion is detected. All these settings can be found under “Advanced Settings”.

The camera can also be controlled by your desktop PC. I had to find out its local network IP address through the DHCP table of my router. I was only able to view the camera’s stream through Internet Explorer. However, the settings can be changed on any browser and operating systems. If you navigate the first time to the camera’s local IP, you will be asked to install a plugin and ActiveX. I did that but then uninstalled that software again. I prefer using my mobile devices to control my camera. It’s easier and the iSmartViewPro app’s interface looks much better than the one provided on my desktop PC.

So far, my camera survived several thunderstorms and heavy downpours. The night vision is astonishingly clear. I didn’t expect that in that low price range. It’s truly a set it and forget it device when it comes to the software configuration. It’s user-friendly and the email notifications  works flawlessly. Just remember to seal the power connection if needed.

In all, the camera is perfect for me and anybody else who doesn’t want to mess with an expensive surveillance system but still wants high image quality and instant motion alerts. Everything can be done with a mobile app and that’s one of the things I like most about this outdoor camera.
